Quilts for Grenfell Tower Disaster – Dumfries & Galloway MQG

In response to the terrible tragedy, Novenka Bex Priestley, a UK quilter and craft addict, set up QuiltsforGrenfell.  The aim was simply wanting to send the people who have lost everything overnight a small scrap of comfort – a quilt of their own that they can keep as they rebuild their lives. This may be one of a very few items that they can hang onto as they are rehoused and go on to rebuild their lives.  It was so wonderful to hear in the news today that some of the victims of the horrific Grenfell Tower Distaster last week have had new homes promised to them.

I’m a member of the Dumfries & Galloway Modern Quilt Guild (DGMQG) and we happened to have our monthly meeting on the Friday after the disaster.  We were keen to get involved and show our support, and we’ve pledged to send some completed quilts to QuiltsforGrenfell.

What you can do to get involved

If you’d like to get involved here is what they need:

  • Larger quilts suitable for adults (they already have sufficient baby/child quilts pledged).  Generous lap size or bigger – any wadding/batting can be used.
  • QAYG blocks at 6 or 12 inch finished (100% cotton batting only please)
  • Completed blocks at 6 or 12 inch finished – any size or style accepted, but made from 100% cotton only

The DGMQG would like to send complete quilts if possible as Novenka is also taking in donations of blocks but she then has to organise getting them sewn up into completed tops and quilted. If you only have time to make one or two blocks then we can put them together as a quilt.  We love this Heart Block by Cluck Cluck Sew that you could make in any of the three sizes:

Two of the shop suppliers have very kindly donated fabric for the backing and binding of the quilts and wadding.  If you want to make your own quilt as an individual or group you can of course use any design you like!

Deadline

  • Individual blocks by Saturday 1st July
  • Completed quilts by Wednesday 7th July

Collection Point

I’ve set the shop up as a collection point so you can bring any of the items above to the shop.  Carillion have offered to transit any donations to the main collection point in London.

If you have any questions then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
