I bought Marilla Walker’s Roberts Collection (and her Isca Shirtdress pattern) when she had a 25% off sale just before Christmas. I hadn’t planned on sewing it quite so quickly, but the notion took me and I had it printed, taped together and sewn within 48 hours! It would have been quicker if I’d had the fabric already pre-washed.
Pattern: Marilla Walker Roberts Collection Dungaree Dress (view C1)
The Roberts Collection is such a great value PDF – it’s a 4 for 1 in terms of patterns. As well as the Dungaree Dress (which comes in two lengths) you also get two styles of dungarees and a cute top.
This is my first time using one of Marilla’s patterns and everything came together really easily. I’ve made a couple of Tilly & The Button Cleo pinafore’s, but I was drawn to the Roberts Collection pinafore for two reasons. Firstly, it has really handy slash hip pockets (I’m always looking for pockets on my Cleo!), and secondly, I think the waist seam gives a more flattering fit (although I don’t think a dungaree dress is ever going to be the most shapely thing you wear!). It has been great to wear over the holidays where I’ve been doing a lot of eating and sitting around, however, it is also great for throwing on my wellies and taking the dog out, so a very versatile piece.
The fabric is a really soft indigo-dyed brushed cotton twill that has a subtle pinstripe running through it. It is the perfect weight for this type of dress and was so easy to sew with. I lined the top bib pieces with some cute polar bear fabric, and used some antique brass coloured Prym press studs for the straps and side opening (applied with my trusty Prym Vario Pliers).
After looking at the finished garment measurements I went down a size from my body measurements and made the size 3. Since this fabric has a bit of body I didn’t want to make it too oversized. I can *just* get it up over my hips but once it is on it feels just right. I am wearing it with my Kwik Sew K4069 turtleneck.
I can definitely see myself using this pattern again, perhaps using a nice cotton/linen mix for a summery version?
