Chambray fabric is a cloth with a plain weave.  It is typically woven using different coloured threads for the warp (lengthwise threads) and weft (crosswise threads) giving it an attractive two-tone colour.  Most typically white is used for the weft threads and a colour is used for the warp threads.  It is typically a cotton fabric but it can also be found made with linen, or a cotton/linen blend.

As it is available in different weights of cloth it is extremely versatile.  Chambray fabric can be used for a wide range of sewing applications and is commonly used in dressmaking.  Lighter weight chambrays are ideal for tops and floaty dresses, while medium to heavy weight chambrays can be used for garments with more structure, including skirts, trousers,  coats and jackets.  Chambray can also be used for patchwork and quilting and makes for an interesting background with added subtle texture.
